Ohio Limited Term License - 18 and Older

As of 2025, this program has been approved by the Ohio BMV to issue a Certificate of Completion for a Class D License for Adult Students (18 and older), fulfilling the required 24 hours of classroom education for the Ohio Limited Term License. (Note: This program does not include the 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction that must be completed with a local driving school.)

What is a Limited Term License?

A limited-term license is the form of driver’s license issued to temporary residents in the United States and is valid for the duration of their stay. A temporary resident is a person who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident under U.S. immigration laws, but who does have legal presence in the country.

To receive credit for this program the following requirements must be met:

  • The Driver must complete National Driver Training's 24-hour Ohio Online Driver's Ed program.
  • Request their Class D Certificate of Completion.
  • Complete 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a local driving school.
  • Complete 50 hours of driving, including at least 10 hours of night driving, with a licensed driver age 21 or older.
  • Must also complete the Fifty-Hour Affidavit Form and have the signature of the supervising adult notarized.

If you currently hold an unexpired out of country license from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea or Taiwan, you are exempt from these requirements, and may obtain a Limited Term License by presenting your current license to the BMV at the time of application
