Can an Ohio Teen Start Driving Immediately After Finishing Online Coursework?

Completing Ohio's online driver's education classroom course is an important milestone, but it is not permission to drive independently. Here is what families need to know about temporary permits, adult supervision, in-car lessons, and the steps toward a probationary license.

Quick answer: Not alone. An Ohio teenager may practice driving on public roads only after receiving a valid temporary instruction permit (TIPIC) and following the applicable adult-supervision requirements. Finishing the approved 24-hour online course does not authorize unsupervised driving, replace the required eight hours with a licensed driving instructor, or eliminate 50 supervised practice hours.

When can an Ohio teen legally start practicing behind the wheel?

A teenager can apply for an Ohio temporary instruction permit at 15 years and 6 months after completing the applicable knowledge, vision, and identity requirements. With a valid permit, the teen may begin supervised practice, even if the online coursework is still in progress. Ohio does not require teens to finish all 24 online classroom hours before every parent-supervised practice session, but they must follow the TIPIC restrictions.

Do not confuse parent-supervised practice with the eight hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction. Ohio's online Class D course and the instructor-led driving component have separate completion and scheduling rules. For the latter, confirm the licensed school's prerequisites after completing the online classroom portion.

Six steps after completing Ohio online driver's education

  1. Check the temporary permit. The teen needs a valid Ohio TIPIC before operating a vehicle on public roads. Course completion alone is not a driving credential.
  2. Follow the age-based supervision rules. Drivers under 16 must have a parent, guardian, or licensed driving instructor in the front passenger seat. At 16 or 17, a validly licensed driver 21 or older generally may supervise; additional nighttime restrictions apply.
  3. Arrange eight hours with a licensed driving instructor. Complete the required professional behind-the-wheel portion through an authorized school. NDT's online classroom course does not itself provide those in-car hours.
  4. Complete 50 separate supervised driving hours. Record at least 50 practice hours, including 10 hours after dark. The 10 nighttime hours are part of the 50-hour total.
  5. Maintain the driving log and affidavit. Use Ohio BMV Form 5791 and follow the BMV's current signature and notarization instructions.
  6. Finish probationary-license requirements. Teens younger than 18 must hold the permit for at least six months, complete the required education and practice, and pass the driving and skills tests before driving independently under a probationary license.

Who must ride with an Ohio teen who has a permit?

Ohio temporary permit supervision
  • Under age 16: A parent, guardian, or licensed driving instructor must sit in the front passenger seat.
  • Ages 16–17: A validly licensed driver age 21 or older generally may supervise from the front passenger seat.
  • Midnight to 6 a.m.: Special supervision rules apply to permit holders younger than 18. A parent, guardian, custodian, or an eligible licensed adult designated on the required notarized BMV form may be needed.
  • Every trip: Carry the permit and follow passenger, seat-belt, and other TIPIC restrictions.

Does finishing the online classroom course mean driver training is complete?

No. Ohio's required Class D instruction includes 24 hours of classroom or approved online coursework plus eight hours of actual behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor. The 50 hours of adult-supervised practice, including 10 at night, are separate. A student can complete one component without finishing the full licensing checklist.

What if the teen already holds a permit before finishing the online course?

A teen with a valid permit may continue lawful supervised practice while completing the course. Finishing online lessons does not remove the permit's supervision rules; independent driving starts only after a probationary license is issued and remains subject to probationary restrictions.
