What are the age requirements to get a permit in Tennessee?


In Tennessee, individuals are eligible to apply for a Learner Permit (GDL Level I) at the age of 15.

How do you get your permit in Tennessee?


To obtain a Learner Permit, applicants must pass a standard vision screening and the Class D knowledge test. Online practice tests are available through the state's e-Services portal. Applicants aged 15 to 17 have the option to take the knowledge test online.

How long must you hold a permit in Tennessee?


Permit holders are required to maintain their Learner Permit for a minimum of 180 days before advancing to the Intermediate Restricted License (GDL Level II).

Who can you drive with when you hold a Tennessee permit?


While holding a Learner Permit, drivers may operate a vehicle only when accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and occupies the front passenger seat. Additionally, permit holders are prohibited from driving between the hours of 10 P.M. and 6 A.M., and all vehicle occupants must wear safety belts.

When can a teen earn their license in Tennessee?
