Rhode Island Continuing Education is designed for licensed drivers seeking to improve their skills and knowledge. What are the age requirements to get a permit in Rhode Island?
In Rhode Island, individuals aged 16 to under 18 are eligible to apply for a Limited Instruction Permit.
How do you get your permit in Rhode Island?
To qualify, applicants must complete a 33-hour driver education course certified by the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI). It's important to note that, effective July 1, 2022, online driver education courses are not accepted in Rhode Island.
How long must you hold a permit in Rhode Island?
To obtain the permit, applicants need to provide a completed Application for License, Identification Card, and Permit (Form LI-1), a certified government-issued birth certificate or other proof of identity, and the Driver Education Certificate from CCRI. These documents must be submitted to the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Who can you drive with when you hold a Rhode Island permit?
While holding a Limited Instruction Permit, the permit holder must be accompanied by a supervising driver who is at least 21 years old and has been licensed for a minimum of five years. The supervising driver must occupy the front passenger seat at all times during vehicle operation.
When can a teen earn their license in Rhode Island?
Teens can earn a Limited Provisional License after holding the Limited Instruction Permit for at least six months, completing 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night), and passing a road test. This license allows unsupervised driving with certain restrictions until the driver turns 18, at which point they may obtain a full operator's license.
