What are the age requirements to get a permit in Pennsylvania?
In Pennsylvania, individuals are eligible to apply for a learner's permit at the age of 16.
How do you get your permit in Pennsylvania?
To obtain a learner's permit, applicants must complete the Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application (DL-180), which includes a physical examination section to be filled out by a healthcare provider. If under 18, a Parent or Guardian Consent Form (DL-180TD) is also required. Applicants must then pass a vision screening and a knowledge test covering traffic signs, laws, and safe driving practices. Required documents include proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security card, and applicable fees.
How long must you hold a permit in Pennsylvania?
After obtaining the learner's permit, individuals under 18 must hold it for at least six months before they are eligible for a junior driver's license. During this period, they are required to complete 65 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel training, including 10 hours of nighttime driving and five hours of driving in poor weather conditions.
Who can you drive with when you hold a Pennsylvania permit?
While holding a learner's permit, drivers must be accompanied by a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old or a parent, guardian, or spouse who is at least 18 years old and has a valid driver's license. The supervising adult must sit in the front passenger seat at all times.
When can a teen earn their license in Pennsylvania?
Teens can earn a junior driver's license after meeting the six-month holding period, completing the required 65 hours of supervised driving, and passing a road test. The junior license allows unsupervised driving with certain restrictions, such as limited driving hours and passenger limitations, until the driver turns 18 and qualifies for a regular driver's license.
