New Jersey Continuing Education is designed for licensed drivers seeking to improve their skills and knowledge. What are the age requirements to get a permit in New Jersey?
In New Jersey, individuals can begin the process of obtaining a driver's license at age 16 by enrolling in a behind-the-wheel driver training course, which allows them to acquire a Special Learner's Permit. Alternatively, those who are at least 17 years old can apply for an Examination Permit without the need for driver education.
How do you get your permit in New Jersey?
To obtain a permit, applicants must visit a Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) Licensing Center with the required 6 Points of ID verification, proof of New Jersey residency, and a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. They must pass a knowledge test and a vision screening. For those under 18, a parent or guardian's consent is also required.
How long must you hold a permit in New Jersey?
Permit holders under 21 years of age are required to practice supervised driving for at least six months before they are eligible to take the road test. During this period, they must log a minimum of 50 hours of practice driving, including 10 hours during darkness. A parent, guardian, or supervising driver must complete form BA-CSD, which must be presented by the applicant at the time of licensure.
Who can you drive with when you hold a New Jersey permit?
While holding a permit, drivers must be accompanied in the front seat by an adult supervising driver who is at least 21 years old, possesses a valid New Jersey driver's license, and has a minimum of three years of driving experience. The permit holder may have parent(s), guardian(s), or dependents as passengers, and only one additional passenger is allowed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. All occupants must wear seat belts, and the use of cell phones or any other interactive wireless devices is prohibited.
When can a teen earn their license in New Jersey?
After completing the supervised driving period and passing the road test, teens can obtain a Probationary Driver's License. This license allows unsupervised driving but includes certain restrictions, such as a prohibition on driving between 11:01 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., unless exempted due to employment or religious reasons. After one year of unsupervised driving without any suspensions or postponements, and upon reaching at least 18 years of age, drivers are eligible to upgrade to a Basic Driver's License.
