Maryland Continuing Driver Education Courses

Maryland Continuing Education is designed for licensed drivers seeking to improve their skills and knowledge. This program also includes benefits such as national recognition by insurance companies for discounts on insurance rates. This program also qualifies as a driving record point-reduction program in several states (excluding Virginia).

Students should confirm with their insurance providers how many hours of education are required for discounts and must complete the course while their license remains valid. Additionally, students are responsible for maintaining a record of their completed course for five years.

In Maryland, individuals can apply for a learner's permit at the minimum age of 15 years and 9 months. Applicants under 16 must provide a completed Learner's Permit School Attendance Certification form (DL-300) as part of the application process.

How do you get your permit in Maryland?

To obtain a learner's permit, applicants are required to pass a vision screening and a knowledge test that assesses their understanding of Maryland's traffic laws and road signs. For those under 18, a parent or legal guardian must co-sign the permit application. Applicants should schedule an appointment at a full-service MVA branch to complete the application process.

How long must you hold a permit in Maryland?

The duration for holding a learner's permit before advancing to a provisional license varies based on age. Applicants aged 18 or under without a high school diploma or equivalent must hold the permit for at least 9 months. Those aged 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as applicants aged 19 to 24, are required to hold the permit for a minimum of 3 months. Individuals aged 25 and older must hold the permit for at least 45 days.

Who can you drive with when you hold a Maryland permit?

While holding a learner's permit, drivers must be accompanied by a supervising driver who is at least 21 years old, has held a valid driver's license for a minimum of 3 years, and is seated beside the permit holder. Permit holders are required to complete a minimum of 60 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours of nighttime driving, documented on the Practice and Skills Log.

When can a teen earn their license in Maryland?

Teens can progress to a provisional license once they have met all learner's permit requirements, including the mandatory holding period and supervised driving hours, and have successfully completed a Maryland-approved driver education program. The minimum age to obtain a provisional license is 16 years and 6 months.
