Louisiana Continuing Education is designed for licensed drivers seeking to improve their skills and knowledge. This program also includes benefits such as national recognition by insurance companies for discounts on insurance rates. This program also qualifies as a driving record point-reduction program in several states (excluding Virginia).

Students should confirm with their insurance providers how many hours of education are required for discounts and must complete the course while their license remains valid. Additionally, students are responsible for maintaining a record of their completed course for five years.

What are the age requirements to get a permit in Louisiana?

In Louisiana, individuals are eligible to apply for a learner's permit at the age of 15. This permit is the initial step in the state's Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, designed to help new drivers gain experience under controlled conditions before obtaining full driving privileges.

How do you get your permit in Louisiana?

To obtain a learner's permit, applicants must successfully complete a 38-hour driver's education course, which includes both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training. Following the course, they are required to pass a vision exam and a knowledge test administered by the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) or an approved driving school. For applicants under 18, a parent or legal guardian must accompany them to the OMV to provide consent.

How long must you hold a permit in Louisiana?

Permit holders are required to maintain their learner's permit for a minimum of 180 days before they can progress to the next licensing stage. During this period, they must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice, with 15 of those hours conducted at night. This practice is essential to ensure that new drivers gain sufficient experience in various driving conditions.

Who can you drive with when you hold a Louisiana permit?

While holding a learner's permit, individuals are permitted to drive only when accompanied by a licensed adult. The supervising adult must be a parent, guardian, or a licensed individual at least 21 years old, or a licensed sibling who is at least 18 years old. The supervising driver must occupy the front passenger seat to provide guidance and ensure safety during driving practice.

When can a teen earn their license in Louisiana?

After fulfilling the learner's permit requirements, including holding the permit for the required duration and completing the necessary supervised driving hours, teens can apply for an intermediate license at the age of 16. This license allows for unsupervised driving with certain restrictions, such as prohibiting driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed adult. Additionally, intermediate license holders are restricted from transporting more than one passenger under the age of 21 who is not an immediate family member between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m., unless accompanied by a licensed adult.
