Idaho Continuing Education is designed for licensed drivers seeking to improve their skills and knowledge. This program also includes benefits such as national recognition by insurance companies for discounts on insurance rates. This program also qualifies as a driving record point-reduction program in several states (excluding Virginia).

Students should confirm with their insurance providers how many hours of education are required for discounts and must complete the course while their license remains valid. Additionally, students are responsible for maintaining a record of their completed course for five years.

What are the age requirements to get a permit in Idaho?

In Idaho, teenagers can begin their journey toward obtaining a driver's license by first acquiring a Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP). To be eligible, applicants must be at least 14 and a half years old. This permit allows young drivers to practice their driving skills under specific conditions before obtaining a full driver's license.

How do you get your permit in Idaho?

To obtain a Supervised Instruction Permit, applicants must be enrolled in or have completed an approved driver education program, which includes 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 6 hours of in-car observation. Additionally, they are required to provide proof of identity, age, residency, and legal presence in the United States. A parent or legal guardian must accompany the applicant to the county driver's license office to sign a consent form, assuming responsibility for the minor.

How long must you hold a permit in Idaho?

Once the Supervised Instruction Permit is issued, the holder must complete a minimum six-month, violation-free supervised instruction period. During this time, the permittee is required to accumulate at least 50 hours of supervised driving experience, with 10 of those hours being at night. This period allows new drivers to gain essential experience under the guidance of an experienced driver.

Who can you drive with when you hold a Idaho permit?

While holding a Supervised Instruction Permit, driving is permitted only when accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and occupies the front passenger seat. This ensures that experienced supervision is available to guide the novice driver through various driving situations.

When can a teen earn their license in Idaho?

Teens can earn their driver's license at 15 years of age, provided they have held their Supervised Instruction Permit for the required six months without any traffic violations and have completed the necessary supervised driving hours. After meeting these requirements, applicants must pass a knowledge test and a road skills test to obtain their driver's license.
