What are the age requirements to get a permit in Hawaii?
In Hawaii, individuals are eligible to apply for a learner's permit, officially known as an Instructional Permit, at the age of 15 years and 6 months. This permit allows new drivers to begin practicing their driving skills under specific conditions.
How do you get your permit in Hawaii?
To obtain an Instructional Permit, applicants must pass a written knowledge test that covers Hawaii's traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. As of December 2024, this test is available online and can be taken from any location with a desktop or laptop computer, internet access, and a working webcam. Mobile devices are not supported for this test. After successfully passing the knowledge test, applicants are required to visit a local driver's licensing center to complete the process, which includes presenting documentary proof of legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, legal presence, and Hawaii principal residence address.
How long must you hold a permit in Hawaii?
Once issued, the Instructional Permit must be held for a minimum of 180 days before the permit holder is eligible to apply for a provisional driver's license. This period allows new drivers to gain essential supervised driving experience.
Who can you drive with when you hold a Hawaii permit?
While holding an Instructional Permit, the permittee is authorized to drive only when accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and occupies the front passenger seat. This ensures that an experienced driver is present to provide guidance and oversight during the learning process.
When can a teen earn their license in Hawaii?
Teens can earn their provisional driver's license at 16 years of age, provided they have held their Instructional Permit for the required 180 days and have met any additional requirements set by the Hawaii Department of Transportation. The provisional license allows for unsupervised driving with certain restrictions, which are lifted upon obtaining a full driver's license at 17 years of age.
