Delaware Continuing Driver Education Courses

Delaware Continuing Education is designed for licensed drivers seeking to improve their skills and knowledge. This program also includes benefits such as national recognition by insurance companies for discounts on insurance rates. This program also qualifies as a driving record point-reduction program in several states (excluding Virginia).

Students should confirm with their insurance providers how many hours of education are required for discounts and must complete the course while their license remains valid. Additionally, students are responsible for maintaining a record of their completed course for five years.

Delaware Teen Supplemental Driver Education Courses

Delaware Teen Supplemental Driver Education is designed for teens who would like additional information on the the best practices when driving. Our courses are recognized by insurance agencies across the nation. So, if your insurance company offers driver education discounts, you can use the certificate from our course as proof of completion.

What are the age requirements to get a permit in Delaware?

In Delaware, individuals aged 16 to under 18, or those under 22 receiving special education services under an active Individualized Education Program (IEP), are eligible to apply for a Level One Learner's Permit under the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program.

How do you get your permit in Delaware?

To obtain this permit, applicants must present a Delaware Driver Education Certificate (Blue/White Certificate) as proof of completing a certified Delaware Driver Education Course. If the course was completed out-of-state, it requires approval from the Delaware Department of Education. Additionally, applicants must provide documentation verifying identity, legal presence, Social Security number (if eligible), and two proofs of Delaware residency. The application must be signed by a sponsor, typically a parent or guardian, who shares liability for the applicant's driving and has authority over their driving privileges.

How long must you hold a permit in Delaware?

Permit holders are required to hold the Level One Learner's Permit for at least 12 months before they can apply for a Class D license.

Who can you drive with when you hold a Delaware permit?

During the first six months of holding the permit, the permit holder must be supervised at all times by a licensed driver who is at least 25 years old and has held a Class D license for a minimum of five years. The supervisor must be seated beside the permit holder in the front passenger seat. After the initial six months, unsupervised driving is allowed between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., with certain exceptions for school, work, and church activities.

When can a teen earn their license in Delaware?

Teens can earn their Class D driver's license at 17 years old, provided they have held the Level One Learner's Permit for at least 12 months without any suspensions, revocations, or cancellations. The Class D license becomes valid on the effective date printed on the license, unless the permit holder's driving privileges have been compromised, in which case the date will be adjusted accordingly.
