Do's And Don'ts

It is worth repeating to yourself that, to your child you are the Parent, and it sometimes takes time for her/him to see you as the Instructor. You can help this process by seeing your child (during the instruction portion) as the Student. Parents sometimes have less patience with their own children than with others; as a result, the child driving the family car may sometimes be treated unfairly by an anxiety-ridden parent. Let's look at some ways to avoid these pitfalls and keep the training relaxed and positive.

The Do's

DO remain calm

Before getting in the car with your new driver, practice speaking in a relaxed tone. Avoid yelling and screaming. After all, driving is a new experience for teenagers, and is often accompanied by high levels of anxiety.

DO pullover in a discussion.

When having a discussion with your student driver, he/she will not have to divide his/her attention between the discussion and the road with the car stopped. This provides a better opportunity for the student to absorb what is being said. Keep a notebook and pencil handy to jot down points that need to be discussed once you are safely stopped. Visual aids assist immeasurably in explaining proper driving techniques.

DO know your student driver's personality.

Each person is unique. Maturity, aptitude and coordination differ in each child. Remember they are individuals. Different teaching methods work with different personalities. KNOW YOUR CHILD and work with him according to his level of maturity, learning ability and physical coordination.

The Don'ts

DON'T be overly critical.

A little praise for correct answers and proper execution goes a long way. Don't try to cover everything at once. For example, some students have difficulty with the hand-over-hand turning method. With their confidence waning, hand-over-hand steering technique can be postponed until more experience with turning is gained. Later review of the technique almost always results in proper performance. Keep in mind that being overly critical will make learning to drive an arduous task, one that the student will come to despise.

DON'T keep the same training route.

For each level, develop a route ahead of time that you can use to evaluate the driver's skill at that level. For example, your first driving session should begin in an empty parking lot. Once you are out of the parking lot phase, the route should have at least three left turns, three right turns, three stop intersections, numerous side street crossings and through intersections. DON'T give last minute instructions.

Give the student some idea where you want him or her to drive. Don't wait until the last second to give directions! New drivers usually have great difficulty compensating for last-minute directional changes. The earlier you give notice, the better.
